Deer Tongue

  • 1 deer tongue

  • 1 onion

  • 1/2 tsp. garlic powder

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 1/2 tsp. thyme

  • 1/2 tsp. celery salt

  • dash of basil

  • several peppercorns

Cut the deer tongue out as far back as possible. Wash and soak it in salt water overnight.

Combine the tongue and all the ingredients in a pot and cover with fresh water. Bring to a boil and simmer for two hours. When completed, drain and cool the tongue, and then remove all of the outer skin. Slice the tongue meat very thin and serve with crackers, cheese and hot mustard. This is an excellent snack overlooked by many successful hunters.
