First Annual Montezuma Youth Waterfowl Hunt

Montezuma Youth Waterfowl Hunt Participants

"AFTER THE HUNT"

The first annual Montezuma Youth Waterfowl was conducted on Oct 8th, 2011 at the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in Seneca County. Eleven young hunters completed a waterfowl ID course on Sept 24th prior to the hunt. The event was sponsored by the New York Conservation Officers Association, the Cayuga County and Seneca County Sportsmen’s Federations, the Friends of Montezuma and two local Seneca County sportsmen’s clubs. Funds from the sponsors enabled the event coordinators to purchase steel shot, duck calls and lanyards, which were given to each young participant, and provided food for lunch and snacks each day of the event. Eight local volunteers acted as guides for the young hunters, and participating on behalf of the New York Conservation Officers Association and the NYSDEC Division of Law Enforcement were ECOs Scott Angotti, Mark Colesante and Scott Sincebaugh.

The event was a great success. The young hunters learned a lot about the rewards of ethical hunting, and were able to take home thirteen ducks from the hunt including teal, pintail and mallards.
